Description:
This PhD project aims to uncover the mineralogy, petrology, and geological processes responsible for the economic concentration of critical niobium and rare earth element (REE) deposits. The study will focus on newly discovered carbonatite occurrences in the West Arunta region of Western Australia (e.g., Luni, Emily, Green, Joyce, Crean, and Hurley) and compare them with well-established niobium deposits in Brazil (e.g., Araxá and Catalão). By characterising the geological framework of the West Arunta region, the research will evaluate the role of magmatic and/or hydrothermal processes in the formation of primary niobium and REE deposits. The results will provide key insights into the metallogenesis of carbonatite-related mineralisation, contributing to more effective mineral exploration programs.
Benefits:
This research will improve exploration targeting for niobium and REE deposits, enhancing Australia’s role in the global supply of critical minerals. By advancing the understanding of the geological processes and conditions responsible for ore formation, the project will support the development of more efficient and sustainable exploration and mining practices, fostering growth in the critical minerals sector.
