Niobium-Tantalum mineralisation of the Mount Weld Carbonatite, Western Australia

Description: The Mount Weld carbonatite is a world renowned REE resource, however areas of the weathered carbonatite are also enriched in niobium (Nb) and tantalum (Ta). Through characterisation of the mineralisation, this PhD project investigates the geological processes controlling concentration and distribution of Nb and Ta. By examining the fresh carbonatite and overlying supergene material, the project aims to follow the evolution of the Nb-Ta mineralisation from its magmatic/hydrothermal origins, through to enrichment and ore concentration processes under near surface conditions. This will allow development of a comprehensive mineral systems model for carbonatite hosted Nb and Ta.

Benefits: Findings will provide new insights into the genesis and concentration of carbonatite hosted Nb and Ta. Understanding geological processes and controls will advance mineral exploration strategies and allow for more effective targeting of these key elements. With global demand for Nb and Ta, essential for modern and clean technologies, this project strengthens Australia’s position in the global critical minerals landscape.
