Description: This project (which also includes a PhD project) explores chemical and isotopic signatures in minerals and their inclusions to understand the conditions of rare metal pegmatite generation and emplacement. It also involves applying new techniques to determine the controls on variable lithium mineralogy and endowment in pegmatites, to establish chemical fertility indices in minerals, and to document the alteration footprints of rare metal pegmatite systems.
Benefits: Development of mappable proxies for prospectivity of lithium and other commodities, improving exploration targeting and resource assessment and supporting Australia’s growth as a leading supplier of critical minerals. The research will advance mineralogical studies and enhance strategies for exploration, ore processing and geo-metallurgy, contributing to the country’s competitive edge in the global mining sector.
