Michael Grove is pursuing a PhD at the University of Queensland under the supervision of Dr Denys Villa Gomez. His research investigates the deportment of critical and economic minerals within iron oxide copper–gold (IOCG) mine waste and tailings to inform reprocessing strategies and resource rehabilitation. His work aims to reduce mine waste footprints, enable sustainable reprocessing of legacy tailings, and support circular economy practices within Australia’s critical minerals sector.
Michael holds a BSc (Hons) in Applied Geology and an MSc in Mineral Processing from the University of Exeter’s Camborne School of Mines. His undergraduate research examined the potential of deep-sea mineral resources in addressing raw material supply challenges and associated environmental considerations. His MSc research applied geometallurgical principles to develop and implement a bench-scale selective flocculation process for upgrading mine waste into viable feed material.
Michael brings professional experience across primary mining operations, metallurgical consultancies, and commercial laboratories in both the UK and Australia. He is passionate about translating geometallurgical research into practical solutions that improve resource efficiency, reduce environmental impacts, and enhance the long-term sustainability of the mining industry.
