Professor Steffen Hagemann is a globally recognised economic geologist at the University of Western Australia, where he is Professor of Economic Geology and Director of the Centre for Exploration Targeting. With more than three decades of experience, his career has focused on understanding how structural, hydrothermal, and geochemical processes interact to control the formation of metallic ore deposits.
Steffen’s research integrates detailed field-based observations with advanced geochemical, mineralogical, and microanalytical techniques to reconstruct the four-dimensional evolution of mineral systems. His work has been central to advancing understanding of gold, iron, and copper metallogeny, particularly within the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia and across various South American countries, including Peru, Argentina, Brazil, and Guyana.
Internationally, Steffen is widely respected for his expertise in hydrothermal alteration, fluid chemistry, and structural controls on ore formation. His ability to combine field geology, fluid inclusion and stable isotope studies, and mineral system analysis has made him a leading voice in economic geology and a valued collaborator across academia and industry.
As a mentor, Steffen brings an exceptional record of supervision and researcher development, having guided a large cohort of postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate students across Honours, MSc, and PhD levels. He is deeply committed to supporting early-career researchers and students, offering both rigorous scientific guidance and a strong applied perspective grounded in industry relevance.
