Prof Andrew Berry

Theme Leader Research Theme 2 – Accelerating Characterisation
ARC Training Centre in Critical Resources for the Future
Australian National University, Chief Investigator

Professor Andrew Berry is a Chief Investigator in the ARC Centre in Critical Resources for the Future and a member of the Centre’s Leadership Team, serving as Theme Leader for Accelerating Characterisation. In this role, he provides strategic leadership in advancing cutting-edge analytical and experimental approaches that underpin the Centre’s research on critical minerals.

Andrew is an internationally recognised geochemist whose research focuses on the mobility, transport, and redistribution of elements during high-temperature magmatic and hydrothermal processes. Using experimental petrology and advanced synchrotron-based techniques, including X-ray absorption spectroscopy, his work provides fundamental insights into element speciation, oxidation states, and partitioning — processes that directly control critical metal enrichment and ore formation.

Within the Centre, Andrew contributes to projects focused on experimental investigations of the magmatic–hydrothermal transition in carbonatites, partitioning of rare earth and critical metals between melts, fluids and minerals, and experimental geochemistry of critical metals. He plays a key role in supervising HDR students working on carbonatite systems, REE behaviour, and metal transport processes, strengthening the Centre’s capacity in characterisation-driven discovery and translation.
