Michael is pursuing a PhD in Earth Sciences at the University of Western Australia under the supervision of Assoc Prof Tony Kemp. His research utilises hyperspectral analysis to map mineral systems and alteration patterns within Western Australia’s greenstone belts, which are rich in mineral deposits. Michael aims to uncover anomalies and trends that could significantly enhance mineral exploration. His work will improve the efficiency and accuracy of exploration, leading to more effective discovery of valuable resources and the development of advanced analytical techniques that will boost Australia’s global standing in the mining industry.
In addition to his PhD, Michael works as a HyLogger Geologist at the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, Western Australia, where he supervises the GSWA hyperspectral core scanner (HyLogger). His responsibilities include interpreting and processing spectral, mineralogical, and geochemical data, as well as the maintenance of databases, report production, and data provision for internal and external stakeholders. He has significant expertise in the QA/QC of hyperspectral data, data analysis, and using XRD, XRF, and LIBS techniques.
Michael holds a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Geology/Earth Science from the University of Western Australia, where he completed a First Class Honours degree. His Honours project focused on geochronology, geochemistry, and mineral separation techniques. Additionally, he has studied a wide range of geological subjects, including GIS, remote sensing, and structural geology.
