Paul Duuring is Manager of the Mineral Systems Mapping group at the Geological Survey of Western Australia, where he leads research that links ore-forming processes to practical exploration outcomes. He completed a PhD in Economic Geology at The University of Western Australia in 2002 and has since held research appointments spanning academia and international collaboration, including postdoctoral roles at Monash University (Melbourne), the University of British Columbia (Canada), and Pukyong National University (South Korea), followed by a Research Associate Professorship at The University of Western Australia (Perth).
Paul’s research focuses on mineral systems across multiple scales, from deposit-scale process studies to regional controls on prospectivity. He has published widely on diverse deposit types, including orogenic and intrusion-related gold systems, komatiite-hosted nickel, porphyry Cu–Au, epithermal Au–Ag, hypogene–supergene iron ore alteration, rare-element pegmatite, and volcanic-hosted massive sulphide deposits. Since joining the Geological Survey in early 2016, his work has centred on economic geology and mineral exploration, with particular emphasis on how ore systems form, how they are modified through time, and how their signatures are expressed in cover. More recently, he has contributed to developing exploration protocols and tools to support discovery under cover.
Paul also contributes to the profession through service roles, having served as Associate Editor for Ore Geology Reviews and committee member for the Geological Society of Australia (WA Chapter), as well as various conference organising committees.
