Dr Antony Burnham is a geologist with Geoscience Australia and an Honorary Lecturer at Australian National University, bringing extensive expertise in geochemistry, mineralogy, and Earth system processes. He represents the Geological Society of Australia within the Centre and is an active contributor to both the Mentoring Sub-Committee and the Industry Experience and Outcomes Committee, where he supports the development of emerging researchers and strengthens connections between academia and industry.
Antony held a series of research positions at the Australian National University from 2014 to 2024, contributing to internationally recognised research in mineral chemistry, mantle processes, and ore deposit formation. His work spans experimental petrology, trace element geochemistry, and the study of deep Earth materials, with applications ranging from understanding Earth’s evolution to supporting mineral exploration.
He is an active member of the international geoscience community, with an extensive publication record in leading journals and contributions to major reference works, including the Treatise on Geochemistry. He regularly serves as a reviewer for top-tier journals such as Nature Geoscience and Science, as well as for major funding bodies including the U.S. National Science Foundation, and has convened sessions at major international conferences including the Goldschmidt Conference.
In addition to his research, Antony is deeply committed to mentorship, teaching, and community engagement. He supervises multiple PhD students and has been recognised for his teaching contributions, alongside outreach activities spanning public engagement, media, and education initiatives.
Through his involvement with the Centre’s committees, Antony brings a collaborative and industry-aware approach to mentoring and engagement, helping ensure students are well-supported and equipped with the skills, networks, and experience needed for impactful careers in geoscience.
