AU Kingshuk Pal

Adelaide University, PHD

Kingshuk Pal is a PhD researcher at the Adelaide University, supervised by Dr Stefan Loehr and Prof Carl Spandler. His work is about decoding how marine sediments trap and enrich critical metals which is a key puzzle in the global shift toward sustainable resources. By combining the geochemical signatures of deposits (bulk as well as in-situ) from ancient and modern marine basins with novel metal isotope systematics, Kingshuk aims to build new models to find these vital deposits.

Kingshuk completed his Bachelor’s (Honours) in 2023 and Master’s in 2025 at Presidency University, Kolkata. His Master’s thesis was focused on the differential mineral weathering of basalt. Before starting his PhD, he worked as a research staff at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), designing experiments to understand REE mobilization in natural clays. His interest in laboratory experiments began during his research work as a ThinkSwiss fellow at the University of Bern, Switzerland (2024), where he built experimental setups to investigate basalt dissolution dynamics. Through these roles, he has developed strong expertise in running state of the art analytical experiments independently and thrives on working with emerging technologies.

During his Master’s, Kingshuk served as Secretary of the Geological Institute which is Asia’s oldest student run geological community. He is passionate about collaborative science, always eager to connect with fellow researchers in the critical metals space, share ideas, and learn from colleagues across disciplines.
