Associate Professor Wei Liu is a leading researcher in artificial intelligence and data science in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Western Australia. She directs the Centre for Natural and Technical Language Processing, where her work spans knowledge discovery from natural language text, generative AI, large-language-model–based semantic technologies, deep learning for knowledge-graph construction, and sequential data mining and forecasting.
Wei’s projects bridge research and industry, from refining knowledge graphs for geological surveys and analysing maintenance logs, to short-term traffic prediction and clinical data integration in ophthalmology. She also leads key research programs at two ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centres and serves on the Western Australian Government Artificial Intelligence Advisory Board, advising on the safe and ethical use of AI.
As a mentor, Wei offers the perspective of a tech leader in AI with extensive experience translating data-science research into real-world applications.
